How kundali matching by name works
In Vedic tradition a newborn is named at the namakarana ceremony, and the first syllable of the name is chosen from a set belonging to the pada — the quarter — of the child's birth nakshatra. Twenty-seven nakshatras, four padas each, gives one hundred and eight syllables in total.
Name-based matching runs that convention in reverse. The opening syllable of each name is looked up in the same table, which yields a nakshatra and a pada, and from those the moon sign follows. Once both moon signs and birth stars are known, the ordinary Ashtakoota calculation proceeds exactly as it would from birth details — all eight kootas, the full 36 points.
How much to trust the result
The method is only as good as its one assumption: that both names were actually chosen against the birth star. In many families that is still the practice, and in those cases the derived nakshatra is simply correct. Where a name was chosen for its meaning, after a relative, or for how it sounded, the syllable carries no astrological information at all and the reading will be wrong without giving any sign of it.
Two practical points follow. Use the name given at the naming ceremony rather than a nickname or a legally changed name. And treat a name-based score as a first pass — before any real decision, run the full birth-detail match or at least the date-of-birth version, which needs no birth time.
What names cannot tell you
Every koota derives from the moon sign and nakshatra, so a name gives you the complete guna score. What it cannot give you is the ascendant or the positions of the other planets. That rules out the Mangal Dosha check entirely, since Manglik status depends on where Mars sits relative to the ascendant — information no name encodes.

Want the accurate version?
Birth dates give a reading that does not depend on how a name was chosen. It still takes seconds, and still needs no birth time.
