Kundali Matching by Date of Birth

The 36-guna score depends on the Moon, and the Moon takes about a day to cross a nakshatra. A date of birth is usually all the calculation needs.

Without a birth time the moon's position is taken at noon. The guna score stays reliable for most charts, but the ascendant and Mangal Dosha checks are approximate.

Why a birth time is optional here

Every one of the eight kootas is computed from two things: the moon sign and the birth star. Both come from a single number — the Moon's position along the zodiac at the moment of birth.

The Moon moves roughly 13 degrees a day. A nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes. So the Moon spends about a day in each birth star, and knowing the calendar date is normally enough to pin it down. When no time is entered we place the Moon at noon local time, which keeps the worst possible error to half a day in either direction.

The one case where it matters

If a birth happened close to the moment the Moon crossed from one nakshatra into the next, noon may land on the wrong side of that boundary — and because the neighbouring star can have a different gana, nadi and yoni, the score can move by several points.

The calculator checks for this. When either chart sits within half a degree of a nakshatra edge, the result carries a note telling you so, and that is the signal to go and find the exact time before relying on the number.

What you give up without a birth time

  • The ascendant (lagna). It changes roughly every two hours, so it cannot be derived from a date alone.
  • House positions. These follow from the ascendant, so they go with it.
  • Mangal Dosha. Manglik status depends on which house Mars occupies, which means it needs the ascendant. It is not assessed in this reading.
  • Dasha timing. The balance of the current planetary period at birth shifts with the exact time.

None of that touches the guna count itself. If you are checking whether a match clears the usual threshold of 18, a date of birth answers the question. If you are making a final decision, it is worth tracing the time from a hospital record or birth certificate and running the full match instead.

Give the place of birth too

The place fixes the time zone, and the time zone shifts the moment being calculated. For births in India the difference is small, but a birth abroad can move the Moon by half a nakshatra if the offset is wrong. If you have no birth details at all, the name-based method is the fallback — with the caveats that come with it.

What each of the eight kootas measures

Ashtakoota means “eight aspects”. Each koota examines one dimension of the relationship and carries its own weight, from a single point for Varna up to eight for Nadi.

  • Varnaवर्ण

    Spiritual compatibility

Varna groups each chart as Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya or Shudra by moon sign — categories of temperament, not caste. It reads the natural work ethic and inner disposition of each partner, and whether the two will comfortably accommodate one another. The point is awarded when the varnas are compatible by the classical rule.

    1 pt
  • Vashyaवश्य

    Mutual influence & control

Vashya sorts the twelve signs into five classes — manava (human), chatushpada (quadruped), jalachara (aquatic), vanachara (wild) and keeta (insect) — and scores the natural pull each class has over the other. It reads who tends to take the lead, and whether that dynamic will feel supportive rather than controlling.

    2 pts
  • Taraतारा

    Health & destiny

Tara counts the distance from each birth star to the other and divides by nine; some remainders are favourable, others are not. Scored in both directions, it is read for fortune, longevity and freedom from disruption after marriage.

    3 pts
  • Yoniयोनि

    Physical & intimate compatibility

Each of the 27 nakshatras carries one of fourteen yoni animals — horse, elephant, sheep, serpent, dog, cat, rat, cow, buffalo, tiger, deer, monkey, mongoose and lion. Yoni compares the two animals for natural affinity or hostility, and is read for physical attraction, intimacy and instinctive comfort.

    4 pts
  • Graha Maitriग्रह मैत्री

    Mental & emotional affinity

Graha Maitri compares the ruling planets of the two moon signs against the classical planetary friendship table — friend, neutral or enemy. It is read for friendship, shared values and how easily two minds meet over a lifetime; many astrologers weigh it above its five points in practice.

    5 pts
  • Ganaगण

    Temperament & behaviour

Every nakshatra belongs to one of three ganas — Deva (gentle, giving), Manushya (worldly, balanced) or Rakshasa (assertive, intense). Gana scores how the two temperaments sit together: same gana matches best, Deva with Manushya works well, and Manushya with Rakshasa is the classic clash this koota exists to flag.

    6 pts
  • Bhakootभकूट

    Prosperity & family welfare

Bhakoot compares the positions of the two moon signs relative to each other and is read for the household: money, family harmony and children. The 6-8 (shadashtak), 9-5 (navam-pancham) and 12-2 (dwirdwadash) pairings score zero and raise Bhakoot Dosha, which is assessed separately along with its cancellations.

    7 pts
  • Nadiनाड़ी

    Health & progeny

Nadi, the heaviest koota, classes every nakshatra as Aadi, Madhya or Antya — mirroring the vata, pitta and kapha constitutions of Ayurveda. Different nadis earn the full eight points; the same nadi scores zero and raises Nadi Dosha, traditionally linked to health and childbearing, with its own classical cancellation rules.
